What is Hyperpigmentation? How to Avoid and Treat

pigmentIf you start to notice spots appearing on your skin, don’t panic immediately.

When patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin color, as in the case of age spots or “liver spots,” it is because of a common, usually harmless condition known as hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is the effect of an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color.

Melanin absorbs the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays in order to protect the skin from overexposure, but in doing so, it can cause:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Other darkened skin patches to become even darker and more pronounced

One common form of hyperpigmentation is age spots, which usually occur in people over 40 because the body at that age has a diminished supply of melanin and cannot fight off the UV rays as well as it used to.

Because hyperpigmentation occurs due to sun damage, it is usually referred to by doctors as solar lentigino, which is benign, but an indication of excessive sun exposure.

Another effect of hyperpigmentation’s appearing because of exposure to the sun, is that it usually occurs on the areas of the skin that are in view of the sun most frequently, such as the hands and face.

Unfortunately, these are also the areas of the body that are most often in view of others.

Avoid skin hyperpigmentation by taking precautions such as limiting your exposure to the sun and applying one of the Dr. Perricone products, No Foundation Foundation. No Foundation Foundation is formulated with a non-chemical SPF 30 to protect even the most sensitive skin from the damaging UV rays that cause dark spots to appear on the skin. It also contains DMAE and Alpha Lipoic Acid to provide anti-aging benefits, such as reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Treat hyperpigmentation by taking supplements and using topical skin care products. Consider Perricone MD Pigment Corrective System, a 2-part combination of supplements and cream, which help to address hyperpigmentation and brown age spots.

This formulation includes:

  • DMAE: helps to improve elasticity; lift, tighten, and tone skin; and diminish fine lines and wrinkles
  • Vitamin C Ester: works to improve firmness and elasticity; diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration; and create a luminous appearance
  • Pycnogenol: helps to improve skin health, renew collagen, and brighten skin

  9. I have dark spots on my cheeks. They have gotten darker after expensive laser and triluma. I would love to use Perricone’s products because it is hard to cover them even with makeup. Thanks! Isa

  10. I have hyperpigmentation as a result of a laser treatment on my face that has gone bad. I’ve tried Lumixyl, Hydroquinone, and TriLuma. The spots however, have gotten darker! I don’t know what to do. It would be great if Perricone’s products really work. I’d like to test it.

  11. I am 30 years old and have just noticed two areas of darkening. One is above my upper lip which makes me look like I have a mustache and the other is above my right eyebrow. The one over top of my lip is really annoying. It is noticeable even with makeup :(

  12. I’ve a SENSITIVE T-zone combination skin and black heads on my nose, upper lips & chin. I get hyper pigmention marks on my entire face, especially forehead & all around my lips in summers. With this at the same time in summers, my skin tone turns uneven. Since last year i’ve even got dark circles around my eyes. Please help..

  13. Acne scaring is extremely prominent on African-American skin. Either I felt invisible in the world as people did their best to ignore me or I felt stigmatized when asked dumb questions like, “Did you just get over the Chicken Pox?” Or some other such non-sense. I had always thought I had a pretty face and knew that if the world could just see past my acne that they would see me too. Acne leaves teenagers and young adults–even adults in their 30s and 40s–with a terrible lack of confidence, leaving them feeling self-conscious and embarrassed almost all the time. I know that’s how I felt. I preferred social invisibility to rude, thoughtless remarks.

In May of last year (2010), a friend gave me a new bottle of the Dr. Max Powers Scar Serum. She got it from a friend, but my friend didn’t need it or want it and asked me if I wanted it. I read the packaging and gave it a try. Why not? I was at the point of trying anything to get rid of those old scars.

I noticed a remarkable improvement within two weeks. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I kept using it and staring in the mirror every chance I got. I couldn’t believe my eyes!!! By the time I finished the first bottle, I was grinning from ear-to-ear and exclaiming to my friend to look at the change in my skin tone. Even an ex-male friend–who hadn’t seen me some time–who had come to help me move asked me what had I done–indicating with a hand gesture, something about my face. Of course, I just smiled and ignored the comment.

  14. I am a scientist and often rely on ingredients and clinical studies to decide on skin products. I just turned 30 and have developed hyperpigmentation which I am conscious of. I am of South Asian decent with medium to dark complexion and am curious about the effectiveness of the pigment corrective system. My main concern is the pigmentation, which is uneven. Pycogenol ( dietary supplement) which is listed as the ingredient responsible for brightening skin can be purchased as a $14 supplement from a health food store. Is this any different to the Pycogenol in the supplement, in which case one could save money and just buy the topical product and buy the supplement at an ordinary store.

I am an optimist and have never tried any Perricone products, which is why I’d like to be wowed by a Perricone product before I become a loyal advocate.

  17. I have been dealing with hyperpigmentation for several years now. I too grew up in the hot sun of New Mexico and never wore sunscreen. I have tried numerous products with not much success. I’ve heard Perricone products are amazing. I’m ready to test!

  19. I have many large and small age spots all over my face including my eyebrow ridge and the sides of my nose. I tried several facial peels with disappointing results. I am a personal stylist and would love to share my positive results with Perricone products.

  20. I still have hyperpigmentation from my pregnancy 5 years ago. It is concentrated under my eyes and on my upper lip, so it looks like I am a football player with a mustache. I would love to try this product and see how it works.

  21. This is dream product–I had a baby two years ago and got some hyperpigmentation. I am reluctant to use harsh products and would love to try this out!

  22. I am getting the nasty little spots on my cheeks and chest, and it is my fault…..due to tanning in my 20s. I am now 38 yrs old and wish they were gone. All the creams ive tried do not work or cause my cheeks to break out. I like all of the products ive tried from Dr. Perricone and would not be supprised if this is the answer. I also have slight hyper pigmentation of my upper lip since my last baby. Its not hair its the skin. Iwould really be greatful if i was chosen to test ths product!

  23. I’ve used other age spot products with disappointing results. I would love to test your products for hyperpigmentation.

  24. I would faithfully and gratefully use the products if picked. I was wanting to contact your office to find out how someone could be a tester and here I saw it on the site! I have such an issue w/hyperpigmentation from acne that I would be a great testimonial! I don’t know what else to do to fix this. Thanks.

  25. South Asian skin is the worst with brown spots as we age I have never found a product that changes or lightens these spots and find myself being forced to wear make up all the time to conceal.
also is there a product that targets serious dark circles another BIG problem in women of Asian descent

  26. I have adult onset acne and the dark spots they leave behind are killing. I’m desperately looking for something that will work well with my dark african american skin.

  27. I just turned 39 and never had hyperpigmentation until two summers ago right after I had given birth to my twin sons. They were born in March, 2008 and while on maternity leave I would walk them daily in the park. I wore suncreen everyday but began to develop light spots around the apples of my cheeks. They faded over the winter. This past summer while on vacation they came back with a vengeance and in more places – - now three spots on upper lip which I get waxed every 3-4 weeks. This time they don’t seem to be fading. I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

  28. I have worn sunscreen every day for 20 years, but every summer I get brown spots of some kind. This year they were worse. I would be so grateful for a treatment for this, which makes me feel mighty elderly!

  29. Last week I had an appointment with my dermatologist to discuss various brown spots that have started appear on my cheeks. These are due to years in the sun in New Mexico at a time that no one knew about sun screen. My Dr. felt that nothing could be done but to bleach them ….I am hoping Dr. Perricone has a better solution.

  30. I have acne scars and enlarged pores. I would like to try Perricone Hyperpigmentation prodcuts and hope that can help minimize the scarring and reduce the pore size. Thank you for considering me.

  31. Informative – had wondered where “age spots” came from
