Simple as Do-Re-Mi

As Julie Andrews sang, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.” To understand why omega-3 is a central player of the Perricone prescription diet, it’s best to start with discussing its benefits.

Essential fatty acids like omega-3 can have heart-protective effects, can lower blood pressure, and can decrease the chance of blood clots. But the benefits don’t end there.

Omega-3 can reduce the pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. This is so, because omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the body’s production of inflammatory compounds, such as arachidonic acid.

Finally, omega-3 is especially good at targeting leukotrienes, which promote allergies and skin disorders. So when psoriasis patients are treated with omega-3, their itchy, scaly patches improve.

Now that you can know the benefits of omega-3, and thus, why it is an integral part of the Perricone prescription diet, what are good sources of omega-3 so you can incorporate it into your diet?

Easy as 123

Fish is one excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially fatty fish. The higher the fat content in the fish, the better the source of omega-3.

  1. High-fat Fish (more than 5 percent fat) include: salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna, sardines, anchovies, and trout
  2. Medium-fat Fish (2.5 to 5 percent fat) include: Atlantic halibut, Yellowfin tuna, swordfish, and bluefish
  3. Low-fat Fish (less than 2.5 percent fat) include: cod, Pacific halibut, rockfish, flounder, sole, and red snapper

But the sources don’t stop there. You can find a more extensive list in The Perricone Prescription.
