Is the Perricone Skin Care Program for Men, Too?

Recently, a few Perricone blog readers have asked if Perricone makes products for men. This is an unsurprising question since Perricone has a number of female celebrity patients, like actresses and models, so at times it may seem to be the only clientele he caters to. However, the answer is yes, the products and the rest of the Perricone program are suited for both men and women.

Nevertheless, due to biology, there are general differences in the properties of skin between men and women and also in the way they age. So it’s important to understand these distinctions when considering a skin care regimen and lifestyle for men.

Read on to find out:

How Men’s Skin is Different than Women’s

The differences between male and female skin begins deep in the structure of the skin. Male skin is about 20% thicker than female skin, because the dominant male hormone, testosterone, causes it to be thicker. Hormones are chemical messengers produced in organs that have an effect on other tissues, like skin-smoothing collagen.

As people of both sexes age, skin becomes thinner as hormone levels (i.e. testosterone and estrogen) drop. However, the drop in estrogen is more dramatic for women than the testosterone drop is for men. This is why it is especially critical for women to keep skin hydrated with a moisturizer.

Another notable difference in men’s skin is that it tends to be more oily than women’s, because women’s oil glands secrete slightly less. This means that women are more likely to experience dryness.

Watch Dr. Perricone discuss how men and women age differently in the video below:

What all of this means is that men aren’t as prone to the signs of aging as women are, but it doesn’t mean they are immune.

For one, men tend to take skin care for granted since it generally requires less maintenance. But this neglect leads to a possibly higher rate of skin cancer and skin damage. In fact, in Dr. Perricone’s practice, he has performed more surgery on a type of skin cancer, basal-cell carcinoma, on the faces, ears, and necks of men than on women.

So even though men have more of a natural protection than women, they still need to maintain their skin with an effective skin care program that incorporates an anti-inflammatory diet, supplements, and skin care products.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet for Men

Healthy fats, low-glycemic carbohydrates, high-quality protein, and fruits and vegetables help the body protect itself from age-accelerating cellular inflammation. Following an anti-inflammatory diet is ideal for creating beautiful skin and trimming down fat, but it also helps men working on their muscular physique.

But juicy steak and Sloppy Joes are often associated as “manly” foods, because men often perceive these meats as more satisfying. Although Dr. Perricone advocates fish and fresh vegetables, men do not have to eliminate red meats from their diet despite their usual association with high levels of pro-inflammatory saturated fats. How is this possible?

Dr. Perricone recommends a healthy alternative: 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised beef and lamb. The benefits of grass-fed meat are numerous.

In comparison to grain-fed beef, grass-fed beef is up to 3X leaner and can have up to 15 fewer calories per ounce.

Grass-fed meat is also superior because it provides more balanced, high-quality fatty acids and antioxidants. For example, grass-fed beef is an good source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It also has 2-4X more essential omega-3 fatty acids. Further, researchers have found that grass-fed meat was higher in folic acid and vitamin C and E than its counterpart.

Finally, grass-fed beef is less likely to contain E. coli bacteria and contains no antibiotics or extra hormones.

Now that you know the goods news (that you can keep red meat in your diet), be sure to include the following in your Perricone diet every day:

  • High-quality protein, like that found in tofu, fish, shellfish, poultry, and you guessed it, grass-fed beef and lamb
  • Low-glycemic carbohydrates including:
    • Colorful fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Whole grains such as old-fashioned oatmeal, legumes such as beans and lentils

  • Healthy fats, such as those found in:
    • Cold water fish (especially wild Alaskan salmon, halibut, sardines, herring, anchovies, etc.)
    • Nuts, seeds, and olive oil

  • 8-10 glasses of pure spring water per day
  • Antioxidant rich beverages like green tea

Skin Care Products for Men

Recognizing the difference in skin between genders, Dr. Perricone has identified anti-aging treatments especially suited for men.

In The Wrinkle Cure, he lists the following as the best anti-aging treatments for men:

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
  • Vitamin C Ester
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

Men can be sure to get the recommended dosage of ALA and Vitamin C Ester by taking them in supplement form, which Dr. Perricone offers. Men can also apply each of these key sciences topically.

Perricone’s Active Tinted Moisturizer, which provides just a hint of color, is formulated with ALA and Vitamin C Ester and serves as a moisturizer and sunscreen with non-chemical SPF 15 protection. This means it covers all of the bases listed above that Dr. Perricone believes men need in their daily regimen. As an added bonus, the multi-use moisturizer also contains DMAE, which helps tighten, tone, and lift the skin.
