How to Treat Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Have dark circles under your eyes? Take off those cucumber slices (who wants to be stuck laying down with food on their eyes?), and get ready to start a more convenient (and clean) regimen to remove eye bags.

But before you find out how to treat dark circles, learn why you have them in the first place.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Unavoidable causes:

  • Aging. As we age, we lose collagen, and skin thins making blood vessels more noticeable.
  • Heredity. Some of us are more prone because they’re inherited.
  • Allergies. Histamine reactions may cause darkness under the eyes, and rubbing itchy eyes darkens under eye circles.

Avoidable causes:

  • Fluid retention. Causes puffiness, which in turn casts shadows.
  • Sun exposure. Sunlight raises melanin levels, darkening skin.
  • Lack of vitamins. Although uncommon, an unbalanced diet may cause dark circles.
  • Lifestyle choices. Smoking and drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages dries skin out.

Does lack of sleep cause dark circles under eyes?

Not directly, but there is a link. Lack of sleep, pregnancy and menstruation all make skin pale. None of these circumstances directly cause dark circles; but since they cause pale skin, they do emphasize dark circles.

How to treat dark circles

There are several remedies to treat dark circles under the eyes. These homemade remedies are temporary solutions, however, and some are inconvenient and messy:

  • Potato peels. Apply on eyes overnight, at least three times a week.
  • Cucumber slices or cotton pads dipped in cucumber juice. Place on eyes for 15 minutes to relax eyes.
  • Rose water. Dip cotton pads into rose water and place pads on eyes for 5-10 minutes.
  • Tomato and lime juice. Mix the juices in equal parts and apply to a freshly cleaned face. Wash after 30 minutes.

Certain daily measures help lessen the appearance:

  • Avoid reading in bed at night, or at least get more pillows. When we lie flat, puffiness increases as fluid pools in the lower eyelids.
  • Eat fruits and veggies. As aforementioned, an unbalanced diet may cause dark circles; so, following a diet rich in nutrients helps.
  • Drink water. Lots of water daily is especially important as hydration reduces puffiness.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect thin eye area skin.

Besides staying hydrated, Dr. Perricone recommends choosing topical treatments rich in antioxidants that help diminish the appearance. Antioxidants such as Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C Ester should do the trick.

Hydrating Advanced Eye Area Therapy, made easier to purchase with Perricone coupons, contain these antioxidants to minimize:

  • Dark circles
  • Puffiness
  • Lines and wrinkles

Reviews of Advanced Eye Area Therapy

I recently tried your Advanced Eye Area Therapy. It was recommended to me for my dark circles and wrinkles (I asked specifically for something to help that). After 10 days of use, there is a HUGE difference! I am in love with this product – took 10 years off my eyes! – Angela (

I saw a difference in a few days. This kind of response never happened before. Now my eyes look younger. The dark circles are gone and the wrinkly texture is gone. Love this product. – Lacy (

This product works very well for me. I am 50+ with several fine lines and a few deeper wrinkles at the corners of my eyes. I also have some dark blue veins under my eyes that bother me. This product has helped all of the above considerably, and I notice a return of the problems when I try something else. I took off 1/2 star as I would like to spend less :-) … so am still trying others, but keep coming back. – RJ (

Apply the patented formula gently under eyes in the morning and evening to even skin tone and leave skin looking radiant and smooth.

  1. My husband and I both have dark circles. It ages us. He really looks tired. We would love to try something we are only 34 and 36 yrs old.

  2. I have always had dark under eye coracles. I would love to have normal looking eyes and not have to see myself as old and tired any more.

  3. I’ve had dark bags under my eyes for years now and I always felt terrible when people told me I looked tired even though I was feeling fine. I’ve been trying out different eye treatments but nothing seemed to work. No tiny signs of improvement whatsoever. I went to an esthetician to take care of the sun damage on my skin and I asked him what I could do about my eyes. He gave me some sample packets of the Lady Soma Renewal Serum. He said this serum is made just for women.

I tried in that night and it made a huge difference. The bags aren’t totally gone but they’ve really minimized. I’m hoping after a week they will totally go away.

  8. Hello, I am a professional sportfishing captain. I haave fished for Marlin and Billfish all over the world with some very high end fishermen/women.

I have taken the next step and have just bought a boat myself located in Los Suenos Resort and Marina, Costa Rica.

I am 46 years young and find that the circles and “racoon eyes” are starting to bother me. I am not vain but would love to try your product to see if it would help someone as skeptical as myself to look a bit “brighter” for my new business.

  18. I have inherited my dark circles, unfortunately for me. I have literally spent thousands of dollars over the years trying to find something that helps. I have not found anything yet. I hate that people are always saying how tired I look, asking me if I am sick etc. This is my number one beauty complaint. I will be ordering this product.

  19. I just turned 47 and have never had a problem with dark circles under my eyes. However, several months ago I was doing some cleaning in our house after a lot of remodeling and was exposed to something that gave me a (temporary) rash on my face, including the undereye area, and my neck. I feel that since then I have a slight darkness under my eyes. I also feel that, although I’ve never had wrinkles under my eyes, I am noticing a slight crease where none previously existed. So … I am very interested in addressing these issues. Have read most of Dr. Perricone’s books and loved them!

  20. I don’t know If I said it already but …This blog rocks! I gotta say, that I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks, :)

    A definite great read..

  21. I have such dark circles that I have had people ask me what happened to your eye were you in an accident. No it’s just me, I’ve tried everything and concealers look just like that a concealer and then that only draws more attention to the dark circles. Chnaging my diet, getting more rest, and dark circle eye cream treatments have not worked. I have tried other Dr. Perricone products all of which have shown improvement and have built my confidence. If this product helps get rid of my dark circles, I am a client for life!

  22. Getting rid of the dark circles would change my looks drastically. I’d look more energetic.

  23. I have dark circles under my eyes, frown line near one eyebrow and basicly at a loss when it comes to useing make-up or products. I’m hopeless.
