Typically associated with the teenage years, acne is a problem that can continue to plague adults throughout their lifetime. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 has acne! By changing your skin care habits, you can finally rid yourself of these frustrating blemishes.

This article will talk about:

Types of Acne

There are two different types of non-inflammatory acne: whiteheads and blackheads. Although they all look different, they are all the result of clogged pores.

Pores are made up of a sweat gland, a hair follicle, and an oil gland. The oil gland lubricates skin and assists in the removal of dead skin cells. However, when the oil gland becomes overactive, the extra oil can mix with debris like dirt, dead skin, or bacteria to create a clog in the pore.

  • Whiteheads are pores that are clogged with sebum (an oily substance) and closed at the surface.
  • Blackheads are pores only partially clogged, leaving the pore open and exposed to oxygen, which gives it a dark color.

Pimples are inflamed pores that usually occur after a whitehead or blackhead has become infected. Blood flow to the area increases as part of your immune response.

How to Get Rid of Acne: 3 Steps

Teenage and adult acne treatment includes cleansing, exfoliating, and topical treatments.

1. Cleansing
Proper cleansing removes dirt and impurities to help improve tone, clarity, and texture. Perfectly clean skin also allows other treatments to penetrate better.

Never use harsh bar soaps or cleanse too often, as both dry out the skin. Even oily skin can be over-cleansed. When too much natural oil is stripped away, the skin can attempt to compensate by producing excess oil.

To properly wash your face, follow these steps:

  1. Prep by removing makeup and rinsing face with warm water (hot and cold can cause broken capillaries).
  2. Use a dime-sized amount of cleanser and gently lather in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse again thoroughly.
  4. Pat dry; don’t rub.

2. Exfoliate
Exfoliate with a gentle scrub with Beta Hydroxy Acid. Beta Hydroxy Acids like salicylic acid exfoliate inside pores to keep them clear and discourage blockage. Avoid harsh, manual exfoliating scrubs because they can irritate blemishes and make acne worse.

3. Topical Treatments
Moisturizing is also important for acne-prone skin. Moisturizer keeps skin hydrated and balanced and often serves as a vehicle for antioxidants and nutrients, as well as treatments for acne, enlarged pores, and signs of aging. However, oily skin should be treated with the gentlest and lightest oil-free moisturizers.

Skin Clear, the Perricone acne kit, treats acne and prevents new blemishes. The kit includes Skin Clear Cleanser, Hydrator, Toner, and Supplements. The products work symbiotically to improve skin’s tone and texture and clear skin from the inside out and the outside in.

  7. I would like to try dr. Perricone’s kit on acne as I battle oily skin, large pores, and brown as well as blackheads regulary. After suffering severe acne for 15 years ages 11-26, I still have troubled skin at age 50, and would love help!I also have fair, delicate, sensitive skin!! SOS!!

  8. I would love to test this product. I’ve tried proactive, neutrogena (3 step system), Clean and Clear’s (3 step system), Acne Free, Differin with Clindamycin Gel. Those will work of a short while but are so harsh that my skin ends up irritated, red, and with worse breakouts.

I find that most products I’ve tried only target my pimples so when the existing ones disappear, there’s really nothing to stop new ones from surfacing.

I really just want to have nice skin by the time my wedding comes in December.

  14. I need something that is not drying to my aging skin. I don’t have bad acne but I do have multiple breakouts that I would like to prevent.

  15. I am nearing 40 (6 months), and have always had combination skin. I battle acne ups and downs and of course want to avoid the inevitable wrinkles. I truly believed that I would not be dealing with this at this age:( Would love to try your product. I have mostly tried Mary Kay and a bit of proactive. I would love to avoid too many chemicals and keep it as natural as possible.

  18. I would love to help you test your products. As I get older, I feel like I’m going through puberty all over again with this adult acne. I’m also tired of products that give me a “tingle” but no end results. I’ve read so many positive reviews of your products and would like to be a part of your testing panel.

  21. I would be very interested in testing your products.

  22. Hypothyroidism seems to be kicking off breakout after breakout. Being nearly 53, I’m very fortunate in that I’ve got oily, Mediterranean skin and therefore very, very few wrinkles. But the zits have to go. Been there, done that, decades ago.

  23. I have a moderate acne condition. I also have combination skin, looking for something that will work. I have tried many other products that dry my skin, but don’t help much. Would love to test Perricone.

  24. Please help me!! I am 33 yo female and have trouble with acne. I am looking for a product that doesn’t dry my skin, but improves the acne. I also would like a product with some anti-aging affects. I used to tan a lot when I was in high school and college and now it is “catching up” to me.

  25. I can’t believe at this age I’m battling both wrinkles and acne! I really didn’t have breakouts when I was younger, but now I’m looking for a product that fights acne without drying my skin, and worsening the appearance of my wrinkles. Perricone products are fantastic, so I’m sure that this one will not disappoint…I would love to test it.

  26. I’m always willing to try new stuff to make my skin look better. I turned 40 in June have had an onset of flaky skin and acne. I started using oil of olay and it has helped a bit, but not what I am searching for.

  27. Hi,
I see your products all the time and am trying to find something non-drying for acne.
Are the acne line fragrance free?
Currently use Clinique and that is ok- a bit drying for combination skin.
I also have sensitive skin, dry eye area..too many skin issues.
