Dr Perricone Acai is a “Superfruit,” but What is a “Superfruit” Anyway?

“Super” evokes thoughts of greatness. You’ve heard of Super Mario, Superman, and the Super Bowl, but have you heard of superfruit?

Put into that context, you may be envisioning superfruits to be gigantic fruits the likes of which you’ve never imagined; but superfruit is real, and certainly not of monstrous proportions.

Since Dr Perricone acai is touted as a superfruit, it is important to explain what this means.

Read on to learn more about superfruits in general and in particular, Dr Perricone acai.

What are Superfruits?

Superfruits are called such because they are high in antioxidants as well as high in nutritional value. Some superfruits marketed today include noni, mangosteen, goji berry, and acai.

Noni is supposed to support a good digestive system, while mangosteen is credited for helping to combat fatigue and help fight infection. Goji berry, nicknamed the “happy fruit” is supposed to support a healthy libido and overall sense of well-being. Finally, acai, called the “beauty berry” by some, is known to be good for skin, hair, and nails.

Superfruits and Antioxidants

What all superfruits have in common is antioxidants, and lots of them. For example, acai when evaluated for its superoxide value gave a value of 161,400 units per 100 g, the highest yet found for any plant evaluated to date.

Antioxidants are important because they can impede and even repair damage to cells caused by free radicals.

Free radical damage is one of the primary causes of aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis. If free radicals take an extra electron from collagen molecules in your skin, collagen becomes damaged, which results in stiff, less elastic skin.

Antioxidants prevent this damage by giving the electrons they seek. Once an antioxidant joins with a free radical, the free radical no longer tries to latch on to other cells. This means that antioxidants make free radicals harmless.

While your body produces antioxidants naturally, your free radical to antioxidant ratio is usually unbalanced with the free radicals coming out victorious. So it is important to seek outside sources of antioxidants, like superfruits, to keep free radicals in check.

What about Other Fruits?

So do regular fruits no longer make the cut?

Just because superfruits offer known and potential benefits does not mean you should write off other fruits.

In fact, Dr. Perricone recommends low-glycemic carbohydrates, like colorful fruits, as part of an anti-inflammatory diet. Be sure to choose frozen or fresh fruits rather than canned since heating and processing destroys many nutrients while adding unwanted salt and sugar.

Some recommended, low-glycemic fruits are:

  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Blackberries

However, fruits that are high-glycemic, like fruit juices, dried fruit, grapes, oranges, and bananas are not recommended. This is because high-glycemic fruits and other carbohydrates rapidly convert to sugar, which creates inflammation on a cellular level throughout your body. This is a problem because inflammation is an aging accelerator.

Since the body needs carbohydrates to function, there’s no need to write them off. Just be sure to get 4-7 servings of low-glycemic carbohydrates in the form of fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes, and whole grains like old fashioned oatmeal. These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as well as water which helps hydrate the skin and body.

Dr Perricone Acai: More than Just the Superfruit

Both superfruits and regular fruits have been discussed, and rightfully so. Whether super or not, fruits contain beneficial antioxidants to some degree.

With this in mind, Dr Perricone’s Super Berry Powder with Acai contains more than just the superfruit acai.

For even more antioxidant power, this powder also contains blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and cranberry. Blueberry, a source of powerful antioxidants, speeds up brain function and encourages youth and vitality. Raspberry, blackberry, and cranberry also contain antioxidant phyto-nutrients so they have anti-inflammatory benefits and can help fight disease and wrinkles.

But the inclusion of acai in Dr Perricone Super Berry should not be ignored. Acai is packed with vital nutrients, minerals, and essential amino and fatty acids. Even superfruit skeptics believe acai, in its purest form, poses potential health benefits.

  7. I would really like to be a tester for Perricone products. I am a mystery shopper for another company in another trade. After a long term illness, I am left with a body that is overweight, out of shape, and looks much older than it is. I am not able to get plastic surgery due to an olive complexion. Please consider me for testing of the weight loss product or any other product.
    Thank you.

  9. At 52, I am falling behind in this race against aging and gravity. Any help I can get at this point I will gratefully try. I’ve heard of the benefits of Acai berry but have yet to try it. Now that Perricone has gotten behind it, my opinion of Acai is more positive.

I would be grateful for an opportunity to try this product. Thank you!
