DMAE Supplements Help Skin Regain Firmness

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a naturally occurring substance that does double duty for the body. Not only does it help skin regain and maintain its firmness, but it also helps the brain.

Because DMAE triggers the synthesis and release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter found in the brain, researchers have hypothesized that it might play a role in numerous aspects of mental health and growth.

DMAE supplements aren’t just good for making your skin look youthful. Working from the inside out, DMAE strikes the balance between brains and beauty.

This article will discuss:

DMAE is cited as providing a myriad of anecdotal health benefits, including:

  • Support of memory
  • Support of learning ability
  • Increase in energy levels
  • Positive benefits on dreaming
  • Mood stabilization
  • Shorter recovery times for athletes
  • Improved performance for athletes
  • Increased intelligence
  • Firmer skin
  • Reduction in wrinkles and lines
  • Maintaining sleep

DMAE is also credited with other positive benefits to weight loss and fat burning, but at this time, these claims are anecdotal and unsubstantiated by scientific research.

Because research into DMAE supplements is still in its early stages, the scientific community hasn’t reached many concrete conclusions about its efficacy. However, there are many enthusiastic supporters of DMAE’s benefits. In particular, studies by Perricone MD and other researchers have concluded that supplementing with DMAE is a useful treatment for skin.

For Dr. Perricone’s introduction to DMAE, check out this video:

Many of the anecdotal benefits listed above involve potential ways DMAE’s acts on the brain, but how does DMAE produce these effects? It is believed that many of DMAE’s brain benefits derive from the fact that DMAE boosts the production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine was one of the first neurotransmitters to be discovered. The body synthesizes it from choline and acetyl coenzyme A. Choline, part of the Vitamin B complex, is found in everyday foods like eggs, meat, and wheat germ, and is critical for proper liver and muscle functioning. It’s also plays a crucial role in proper fetal development, and is thus an important nutrient for pregnant women.

Acetyl coenzyme A is a substance that interacts with other enzymes to build glucose and fatty acids. Originally, scientists referred to acetylcholine as “vagusschtuff” because the neurotransmitter was released due to stimulation of the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve; it extends from the brain stem to the neck, thorax, and abdomen.

In the skin, acetylcholine is responsible for making muscles respond and thus gives muscles their tone. Supplementing with DMAE increases the amount of acetylcholine produced, and this can translate into increased muscle tone.

DMAE supplements can help reduce lines and wrinkles by facial toning muscles, creating a tighter and smoother appearance. This can be especially helpful the production of acetylcholine and the resulting muscle reaction decrease as aging continues.

In the brain, acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter. The relationship between DMAE and acetylcholine derives from the fact that DMAE passes through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to convert choline in the brain. DMAE is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier because the BBB is semi-permeable; it doesn’t let all substances pass through. Once through the BBB, DMAE converts choline in a way that promotes the formation of acetylcholine, of which choline is a key ingredient.

Acetylcholine has been studied as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (wherein levels of acetylcholine are depleted) and schizophrenia. Since acetylcholine is a product of DMAE, similar studies have been conducted to determine the effect of DMAE as a treatment for brain disorders. DMAE appears to be helpful in treating mental health disorders among over-methylated people and those and have high dopamine and low histamine levels.

But just as acetylcholine can have effects on psychiatric conditions, it is also useful for anyone looking for a supplement to benefit daily functioning and should be part of an anti-inflammatory diet. Since acetylcholine regulates sensory stimulation, it can positively impact sleep quality and quantity. Especially in menopausal women, who experience a drop in acetylcholine levels, DMAE supplements can help replace acetylcholine and improve sleep. Acetylcholine’s ability to regulate sensory stimulation also means that taking DMAE supplements can improve concentration by blocking out distractions.

drperricone5As always, pay attention to labels and proper dosages when supplementing with DMAE. Common side effects of ingesting more DMAE than the body needs include insomnia, headaches, and muscle tension. Also, there is when it comes to acetylcholine, there can be too much of a good thing. Since this substance has such profound effects on the brain, do not oversupplement with DMAE. Throwing off acetylcholine levels can have serious side effects, ranging from depression and anxiety to muscle pain. The good news is that taken properly, DMAE supplements can help skin while also helping the brain.
