Benefits of Dr. Perricone’s Astaxanthin Supplement

Why are flamingos pink? They get their healthy fill of pinkish-red astaxanthin in their diet. Astaxanthin (As-ta-Zan-thin), a carotenoid pigment and powerful antioxidant, is found naturally in a number of marine plants, algae, and seafood (e.g. salmon, trout, and shrimp).

Although humans needn’t consume enough astaxanthin to turn flamingo-pink, people should still incorporate this free radical fighting carotenoid into their diet.

Of course, following a diet rich in seafood will help you assimilate this beneficial antioxidant; however, adding an astaxanthin supplement to your routine is a surefire way to make sure you get the recommended daily dose.

But first, what is astaxanthin, and why is it beneficial? (If you know about its benefits, then read about Astaxanthin side effects.)

Benefits of Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin’s most basic source is a microalgae, Haematococcus pluvialis. Predators eat Haematococcus, the food chain continues, and astaxanthin accumulates to the point of which flamingos and salmon have a pinkish hue.

As aforesaid, astaxanthin is a carotenoid, which are natural, fat-soluable pigments. Primarily found in plants and algae, carotenoids are critical in photosynthesis. Animals cannot synthesize carotenoids, but still reap their benefits by incorporating them into their diet. The carotenoid family also includes lutein, beta-carotene (provitamin A), and lycopene.

Astaxanthin’s antioxidant properties are superior to its carotenoid family members; in fact, it is 40 times more potent than beta-carotene. It is unique from the rest of the carotenoid family in that its chemical structure exposes itself to the interior as well as the exterior of a cell. This allows it to more efficiently and quickly neutralize harmful free radicals, which attack cell membranes causing oxidative stress.

In other words, Astaxanthin protects cell membrane components from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Specifically, astaxanthin works to:

  • Protect the brain, central nervous system, and eyes.
  • Increase physical endurance while reducing muscle damage.
  • Reduce eye fatigue and improves vision.
  • Diminish wrinkles through internal supplementation.
  • Regulate inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. (Increased levels of these may predict onset of rheumatoid arthritis.)
  • Improve gastric health.

  3. Woah! I’m really loving the template.theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a superb job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Safari. Outstanding Blog!

  4. I have used Astaxanthin for over two years and I have found that it has multiple benefits: my vision seems to have improved andmy gastric “problems” sell ‘less’. One thing a person must remeber to do ..I learned the “hard” way is to be consistent. That is …not to take it for a long period of time….forget to replace it and thik the benefits will continue. I kept forgetting to put it on my shopping list and then began to realize…I needed to put it on the list. To get the maximum benefits..take consistently and also relaize that to feel/see a difference does not overnight…

  22. Hello. I have recently been diagnosed with NAFLD (Non alcoholic fatty liver disease). I am 42 years old and my doctor said I must lose weight (50lbs) to aid in hoping to reverse the disease. I’ve done an about-face with my diet but want to ensure that I am getting all the micronutrients and proper nutrition to help flush/burn the fat from my liver and my body.

  23. I am very interested in taking Astaxanthin. I like the fact that it fights free-radicals, that it’s good for the eyes & of course the Brain. Thank you for educating us how to better our lives through good health.

  24. If I am allergic to shrimp can I still take asthaxanthin supplements?

  25. Is the Astaxanthin supplement the main ant-inflammatory ingredient in the Skin and Total Body Supplement? I started taking these just 5 days ago, and I’m blown away by how they have affected me! I’ve been healthy my whole life, until several months ago when I came down with severe Raynauds and other symptoms that make doctors think I’m getting a connective tissue disease. My feet, ankles, legs and hands have been swollen since September. I started taking these last Friday, and Saturday morning, my ankles, feet and legs were almost normal and I lost 3 lbs of water weight. I continue to feel better each day – I no longer get stiff sitting and my joints feel better. For the first time in a while, I have hope that I will get better instead of worse! So, I am really curious about which ingredients in these vitamins are causing this tremendous improvement? And by the way, thank you Dr. Perricone, from the bottom of my heart!

  26. I’m a skin care junkie, and came on here to read about the benefits of astaxanthin. I was comparing this and french pine bark to see which would be most beneficial a supplement. I found this info helpful in making my decision. Also, I’d LOVE to become a perricone tester. :)

These aspects are interesting to me:ncrease physical endurance while reducing muscle damage and Regulate inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. (Increased levels of these may predict onset of rheumatoid arthritis.) as well as the gastric possibilities and the anti-aging, of course). I would love to try this product.

  30. I would love to be a tester for the sheer reason that I am 45 yrs. old and I have Hypothyroidism. I take thyroid medication but it still just doesn’t seem to get me back to the way I used to feel. I’ve even added an extra thyroid health supplement but still nothing. I would greatly appreciate the chance to be a tester and maybe find this to be the answer to what my body needs. Thank you Jacqueline Risica

  31. I took AstaFX for three days and was looking forward to seeing the results. On the third or fourth day, I developed hives and had to stop taking it. I am allergic to shellfish. Could this be related to my allergic reaction to AstaFX?
I also have Sjogren’ss disease which leaves my skin, eyes and throat dry. It also causes join pain. Is there any other supplement I should consider that may not have a negative side effect?

  32. I also am allergic to shellfish. Would I be able to take the Astaxanthan supplement witout having a reaction? Please let me know. I am very interested in the benefits of this supplement.

  33. Well I was looking at a vidio at Dr Oz website and learned about Astaxanthin. If it works is all well and good, but I am taking 3 HBP med Diovan,Bystolic and Terazosin, also Lipitor. Since I am taking these medication I would be cautious to add astaxanthin to my diet, I am 59 wed to a 29 and thus I need all the energy I can get, thus far I am doing well keeping up, but afraid this is not going to last much longer. In one of the comment it said it could affect your libido, so I am out for now and until then I will stay off the astaxanthin and keep my erection working. Thank you for your time and opportunity to exchange words.

  34. A month a go I had facial Skin Rejuvenation peel (phenol). Now I am worried that I will turn out too pale faced. Do you think Astaxanthin could help me restore natural pigmentation? Do you believe that Astaxanthin (2 or 4 mg/day) is safe after a chemical peel?? UB

  42. I am a 45 year young woman who has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. A few years ago, I followed a program that decreased but did not eliminate breads and other foods like your program.
