Benefits of Dr. Perricone’s Astaxanthin Supplement

Why are flamingos pink? They get their healthy fill of pinkish-red astaxanthin in their diet. Astaxanthin (As-ta-Zan-thin), a carotenoid pigment and powerful antioxidant, is found naturally in a number of marine plants, algae, and seafood (e.g. salmon, trout, and shrimp).

Although humans needn’t consume enough astaxanthin to turn flamingo-pink, people should still incorporate this free radical fighting carotenoid into their diet.

Of course, following a diet rich in seafood will help you assimilate this beneficial antioxidant; however, adding an astaxanthin supplement to your routine is a surefire way to make sure you get the recommended daily dose.

But first, what is astaxanthin, and why is it beneficial? (If you know about its benefits, then read about Astaxanthin side effects.)

Benefits of Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin’s most basic source is a microalgae, Haematococcus pluvialis. Predators eat Haematococcus, the food chain continues, and astaxanthin accumulates to the point of which flamingos and salmon have a pinkish hue.

As aforesaid, astaxanthin is a carotenoid, which are natural, fat-soluable pigments. Primarily found in plants and algae, carotenoids are critical in photosynthesis. Animals cannot synthesize carotenoids, but still reap their benefits by incorporating them into their diet. The carotenoid family also includes lutein, beta-carotene (provitamin A), and lycopene.

Astaxanthin’s antioxidant properties are superior to its carotenoid family members; in fact, it is 40 times more potent than beta-carotene. It is unique from the rest of the carotenoid family in that its chemical structure exposes itself to the interior as well as the exterior of a cell. This allows it to more efficiently and quickly neutralize harmful free radicals, which attack cell membranes causing oxidative stress.

In other words, Astaxanthin protects cell membrane components from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Specifically, astaxanthin works to:

  • Protect the brain, central nervous system, and eyes.
  • Increase physical endurance while reducing muscle damage.
  • Reduce eye fatigue and improves vision.
  • Diminish wrinkles through internal supplementation.
  • Regulate inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. (Increased levels of these may predict onset of rheumatoid arthritis.)
  • Improve gastric health.

  8. Is the Astaxanthin supplement the main ant-inflammatory ingredient in the Skin and Total Body Supplement? I started taking these just 5 days ago, and I’m blown away by how they have affected me! I’ve been healthy my whole life, until several months ago when I came down with severe Raynauds and other symptoms that make doctors think I’m getting a connective tissue disease. My feet, ankles, legs and hands have been swollen since September. I started taking these last Friday, and Saturday morning, my ankles, feet and legs were almost normal and I lost 3 lbs of water weight. I continue to feel better each day – I no longer get stiff sitting and my joints feel better. For the first time in a while, I have hope that I will get better instead of worse! So, I am really curious about which ingredients in these vitamins are causing this tremendous improvement? And by the way, thank you Dr. Perricone, from the bottom of my heart!

I am planning on following the plan and looking forward to a pain free lifestyle. I would love to be a tester for your anti-inflammatory supplements and skin care products.
