treat adult acne

Learn how to effectively treat acne and achieve clear skin by addressing the causes and types of acne and exploring solutions.

Acne is not simply an unpleasant aspect of adolescence but rather a skin condition that affects many people throughout their life.

This irritating and seemingly persistent affliction of the skin has a variety of causes, forms, and solutions.

In order to gain a better understanding of acne and the potential solutions available, this article will discuss:

Causes and Types of Acne

Acne is caused by a variety of factors. Some of these factors are within a person’s control while others are not.

Causes of acne include:

  • Stress
  • Hormones
  • Diet
  • Overactive oil or sebaceous glands
  • Bacterial buildup in the skin
  • Heredity
  • Heavy or greasy cosmetics

The aforementioned causes can lead to several types of acne ranging in severity.

Types of acne include:
Non-inflammatory forms (often turn into a type of inflammatory acne):

  • Whiteheads – result of trapped sebum and bacteria below the surface of the skin which forms white spots on the skin’s surface
  • Blackheads – occur when pores are open to the surface of the skin and sebum oxidizes which creates a brown or black dot on the skin

Inflammatory forms:

  • Papules
  • Pustules
  • Nodules
  • Cysts

The inflammatory forms of acne are similar to whiteheads and blackheads in the respect that they are caused by a sebaceous follicle plugged with sebum, dead cells from inside the sebaceous follicle, tiny hairs, and sometimes bacteria. However, their appearance and other characteristics differ from whiteheads and blackheads.

Papules happen when there is a break in the follicular wall and white bloods cells gather in the pore which causes an inflamed appearance. Pustules are the next phase which is characterized by a round pus-filled lesion that is the result of white blood cells coming to the surface of the skin. These types of acne are most often referred to as pimples.

Severer types of acne are nodules and cysts. They both affect deeper skin tissue and are characterized by their larger size and more severe inflammation.

Solutions for Treating Acne

Whether you are suffering from whiteheads or cysts, Perricone offers a holistic approach to acne care that works in a variety of ways to help remedy the multitude of causes and types of acne.

Perricone solutions for treating the causes and symptoms of acne include:

  • Skin Clear
  • Anti-inflammatory diet
  • Non-greasy cosmetics
  • Stress relief

The Skin Clear regimen contains the Skin Clear Cleanser, Skin Clear Toner, Skin Clear Hydrator, and Skin Clear Supplements. These products work together to treat the causes and symptoms of acne. The Skin Clear Cleanser helps to reduce and treat the symptoms of excess sebum which is the root of all types of acne. The Skin Clear Toner works to calm the inflammatory effects of acne. Both of these products utilize Alpha Lipoic Acid, Salycyllic Acid, and Eucalyptus leaf oil. These key ingredients work to combat acne by helping to reduce pore size, unclog pores, and clear acne breakouts and blemishes.

The Skin Clear Hydrator renews the skin’s appearance without the oily effects. Formulated with Allatoin and Lactic Acid, it regenerates and smooths skin as well as sloughs cells from the skin’s surface and prevents clogged pores. Working from the inside out, the Skin Clear Supplements harness the power of Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Omega 3, and other vitamins to promote clear skin.

In addition to using the Skin Clear regimen, Dr. Perricone recommends implementing an anti-flammatory diet to treat the internal causes of acne.

High sugar foods are one of the main causes of inflammation and ultimately acne; therefore, it is essential to minimize their presence in your diet for clear skin. Replacing high sugar foods with foods rich in protein and fatty acids along with eating the proper starches will have a significant impact on your skin. Some protein-rich foods include salmon, chicken, and turkey. Incorporating foods with fatty acids, such as olive oil and avocado, into your diet will help regulate sebum levels. Starches that don’t perpetuate inflammation include fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

In order to ensure that you’re not sabotaging your skin with greasy cosmetics, it is important to make sure to use light, non-greasy cosmetics. Perricone’s No Foundation Foundation possesses many of the benefits of a traditional foundation without heavy, pore clogging effects. It works to correct skin tone and imperfections as well as smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Another way to help clear skin is to decrease stress levels. Stress relief through yoga, exercise, and a good night’s sleep will benefit your skin. Simple activities like walking outside can significantly boost your sense of well-being while decreasing acne-causing stress.

Through combining the use of topical treatments, supplements, and anti-inflammatory diet, along with the use of non-greasy cosmetics and stress relief techniques, you can achieve clear skin and help to banish whatever type of blemishes you have.
