Overview of Acne
One popular myth about acne is that it is caused by dirt or greasy foods; this is however not the case.
The fact is, acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. These follicles are connected to glands that release an oily discharge called sebum that is used to lubricate the skin. Sebum usually moves along the hair and leaves through an opening at the surface of the skin.
When too much sebum is created, it can build up with dead skin cells in the hair follicle and create a plug. Depending on how deep this plug is, and whether it is open at the top or not, determines what kind of lesion (e.g. pimple or whitehead) will appear.
These factors play a role in the body’s development of excess sebum:
- Hormones
- Bacteria
- Medications
- Heredity
Although greasy foods do not play a role in the creation of acne, other foods actually might. For instance, inflammatory foods such as those with a high starch content, like bread and chips that increase blood sugar, may play a role in raising sebum levels.
By taking into account the causes of acne, it is easy to choose an acne remedy that works.
Acne Remedies
First, following an anti-inflammatory diet can help.
Such a diet consists of:
- High quality protein
- Low -glycemic carbohydrates
- Healthy fat (salmon, nuts, olive oil)
- Drinking 8-10 glasses of water
- Anti-oxidant rich beverages, such as green tea
This along with supplements and topical skin care products work from the inside out and the outside in to keep your skin healthy.
Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid are two ingredients that work to prevent pores from becoming clogged. Lactic Acid is able to do this because it is an alpha hydroxy acid that is able to enter the skin easily because of its small molecules. Salicylic Acid prevents clogs because it is a keratolytic, which means that it sheds the cells of the outer layer of skin before they become trapped in a pore.
To combat bacteria, look for the ingredient Eucalyptus Leaf Oil in your acne remedy. Eucalyptus Leaf Oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities. It also works to cool and calm inflamed skin.

Hi, I would love to test this product, why? There are a number of reasons. First, I have a problem with my skin breaking out due to stress, and always on the same spots. I have tried over the counter preparations as well as prescribed medication with no success. I understand that there isn’t a “magic” solution that is going to solve my dilemma completely but if there is something that will improve my condition from what I have know I would be completely satisfied.

I am almost 23 years old and I have bad acne and wrinkles, everyone notices it. I don’t smoke or drink or do anything else that would be hard on my body. I feel like crying everyday when I look at my face.

I am 50, I take pretty good care of myself, I workout, try to eat right and have even tried some of Dr. Perricone’s recipes I’ve read several of his books, and use several of his products. I have been struggling with adult acne for the past 6 years, but nothing seems to be working. I have a clarisonic brushhead, countless drug store acne creams and cleansers, and even tried differin topical medication. But nothing seems to work. I would love to try perricone acne products.
