Acne Remedies – Learn the Facts

Overview of Acne
One popular myth about acne is that it is caused by dirt or greasy foods; this is however not the case.
The fact is, acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. These follicles are connected to glands that release an oily discharge called sebum that is used to lubricate the skin. Sebum usually moves along the hair and leaves through an opening at the surface of the skin.
When too much sebum is created, it can build up with dead skin cells in the hair follicle and create a plug. Depending on how deep this plug is, and whether it is open at the top or not, determines what kind of lesion (e.g. pimple or whitehead) will appear.
These factors play a role in the body’s development of excess sebum:
- Hormones
- Bacteria
- Medications
- Heredity
Although greasy foods do not play a role in the creation of acne, other foods actually might. For instance, inflammatory foods such as those with a high starch content, like bread and chips that increase blood sugar, may play a role in raising sebum levels.
By taking into account the causes of acne, it is easy to choose an acne remedy that works.
Acne Remedies
First, following an anti-inflammatory diet can help.
Such a diet consists of:
- High quality protein
- Low -glycemic carbohydrates
- Healthy fat (salmon, nuts, olive oil)
- Drinking 8-10 glasses of water
- Anti-oxidant rich beverages, such as green tea
This along with supplements and topical skin care products work from the inside out and the outside in to keep your skin healthy.
Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid are two ingredients that work to prevent pores from becoming clogged. Lactic Acid is able to do this because it is an alpha hydroxy acid that is able to enter the skin easily because of its small molecules. Salicylic Acid prevents clogs because it is a keratolytic, which means that it sheds the cells of the outer layer of skin before they become trapped in a pore.
To combat bacteria, look for the ingredient Eucalyptus Leaf Oil in your acne remedy. Eucalyptus Leaf Oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities. It also works to cool and calm inflamed skin.

I’m a 32 year old mother of six. I unfortunatly spend all of my time taking care of everyone else and have let myself fall apart. I have had really bad acne most of my life. My skin got some what better during pregnancy and nursing – but I am not doing either at the moment and my skin has gone crazy again. Nothing works. I would LOVE to test this line. I have a lot of scarring on my face from my teenage years, and my pores are very big and congested (blackheads). It is driving me crazy and I’m at the end of my rope.

My daughter has been suffereing from acne since she was 10. The dermatologist has not helped at all and we’re looking for a new product to test.
I am looking for a product to help my daughter, who is 24, and has had terrible acne for about 6 years. We have tried everything, she’s been to a couple dermatologists and they have tried multiple therapies, none have which have really helped. I love Perricone’s Acne Line! It is the best line of products to keep my skin clear but does not dry out my skin. I simply love it & can not say enought about it!!

I just started using Skin Clear line along with the supplements. I am really hoping it works and I’ve been reading the books to help me understand the diet and what I need to do.
