It is never too late to start bringing your skin back to the youthful firmness and glow it once had. In order to reduce wrinkles, it is best to understand what causes them to appear.
Wrinkles develop for several reasons. As the skin ages, its amount of elastin and collagen decrease. Elastin and collagen are proteins that allow youthful skin to bounce back after repeated motions. As the levels of these proteins decrease, the skin begins to develop crease lines and wrinkles.
3 factors that lessen elastin and collagen levels include:
- Ultraviolet radiation. UV radiation leads to the release of an enzyme called matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix metalloproteinases break down collagen and are responsible for dermal photoaging in human skin.
- Free radical damage. Caused by smoke, chemical exposure, and more.
- Dehydration. This is because, as the skin ages, it loses moisture in its outer layers, leaving the skin feeling dry and appearing saggy.
Reduce wrinkles by protecting yourself from the causes of wrinkles.
- Combat UV radiation.
Limit sun damage by wearing sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 every day. Also, limit the time in the sun. One easy way to get the sun protection you need is to use a moisturizer that includes SPF, such as Dr. Perricone’s Active Tinted Moisturizer.
- Fight free radical damage.
Protect the cells of the body from free radical damage with antioxidants. Antioxidants, such as Vitamins C and E are very effective in keeping cells healthy and shielded from free radicals that can break them down and lead to signs of aging as well as health concerns. Part of an anti-inflammatory diet, antioxidants can be found in sources such as fruits, vegetables, and green tea.

- Hydrate dehydrated skin.
Treat dehydrated skin by drinking 8-10 glasses of pure spring water each day. Also, apply strong moisturizers, such as Intensive Moisture Therapy, a moisture therapy cream gentle enough for stressed skin. Especially formulated with Phospholipids, DMAE, and Tocotrienols (i.e. a form of vitamin E), it imparts visibly more radiant and healthier looking skin.
